I want to officially welcome all REBarCamp and Inman NYC attendees, speakers, sponsors and crashers to the debut of the new Social Media Training Camp Blog - A place where people who “need” are connected with people who “know”.
This site is just the beginning of an excellent journey for me - and the awesome Social Media coaches and trainers who choose to be involved. I am looking forward to an amazing 2009. How about you?
Although I will not be there, in the Big Apple, enjoying your company and learning new things with all of you … As a gal who grew up in NYC, I have a list of 20 must-do’s that you MUST try to DO in your free time (ha ha ha).
Top 20 Things that Mariana Thinks You Should do While in New York:
- Eat a Knish with mustard (or a Coney Dog) from one of the roadside umbrella stands.
- Buy a single used shoe from a homeless person selling random things to buy beer money.
- (If any are still around) Go into a stand-alone phone booth and come out pretending to be Superman.
- Ride the elevator to the top of the Empire State Building and take in the night views
- Take a walk through SoHo (South Houston) and St. Mark’s Place in the Village (Greenwich Village - NW of Broadway and Houston) and soak in the rich history. (Bonus - Find the first location of Tish and Snooky’s “Manic Panic” Punk Boutique…)
- Eat a slice of flat, greasy NY pizza - (then eat another one for me because Colorado pizza sucks).
- Take a horse and buggy ride through Central Park - Visit Strawberry Fields and sing the Beatles song while you are there. (Bonus: Check out the last residence of John Lennon at the Dakota Building - NW corner of 72nd and Central Park West).
- Give $5 to a random street musician
- Visit Grand Central Station and watch the break dancers and listen to the musicians play for you.
- Stand over the large sidewalk grates long enough to feel the subway rumble under your feet. (This used to scare the heck out of me as a kid…) If you are wearing a billowy skirt or dress, preferably white - do your best impersonation of Marilyn Monroe as the subway passes.
- Take a moment of silence at Ground Zero - site of the 9-11 Attacks. Take an extra moment of silence in for me, as I have not been back to NYC since the attacks.
- Take a thrill ride in a NYC Yellow Cab - even though they will rip your lips off with the fares.
- Take your picture in front of the Ed Sullivan Theater (Broadway and 53rd - home to the Late Show with Dave Letterman) and make sure you buy a soda at Rupert Jee’s Hello Deli next door.
- Ride the subway … anywhere … and then back. (Well, maybe not anywhere …maybe just across Manhattan.)
- Go to Saks 5th Avenue (where the rich people STILL shop) 611 5th Avenue.
- Visit NY Public Library at 40th and 5th. (Remember Ghostbusters?)
- See if you can spot Leonardo Di Caprio or Robert De Niro at the Tribeca Bar and Grill or the Cafe Habana in SoHo.
- Check out China Town (off Canal St.) and take pictures of the windows full of dead, hanging chickens.
- Sit on the steps of St. Patrick’s Cathedral while you eat your knish and watch local sk8ers tear it up. (5th and 50th)
- Send me a postcard of NYC: Mariana Wagner - c/o Wagner iTeam - 13710 Struthers Rd., Colorado Springs CO 80921
Thank you for taking the time to check out our new blog and coaching project … and enjoy your time in New York!
